"Recognizing every student"

Student Prints founder Bill Schoonover says he grew up as an Army brat who eventually ended up in Heidelberg, Germany, where he graduated from the American Dependents Heidelberg High School in 1953.

Heidelberg, a famous, ancient and beautiful town on the Neckar River, was the location of Sigmund Romberg's well-known operetta, "The Student Prince," and that's how the name came into being. He borrowed the name and changed it slightly, Schoonover said.

After high school, he did a little more traveling and then joined the Army where he served four years in Europe. (In those days, one either enlisted or was drafted.) He found his way to Anacortes, Washington, and then attended Western Washington College of Education. He taught in the Bellingham School District, received his Master's degree and went back into the military.

While serving in the Reserves, he started Student Prints selling imprinting machines and button makers. He eventually retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Reserves, transferred the company to Mark Grim, and now resides in the Bellingham area where he is a volunteer driver for the Disabled American Veterans. He also plays Santa Claus for the handicapped.

Current owner Mark Grim, the son of one of Mr. Schoonover's longtime friends Gary Grim, acquired Student Prints in January of 2001. He said he pledges to strive to continue the tradition of great customer service and satisfaction that Student Prints has kept since its inception in 1972.

Grim started another business, Panhandle Premium in 1999, which makes candy products commonly sold in Canada available to people in the United States. That idea was implemented and the business opened on the Internet in October of 1999. Almost every type of candy commonly sold in Canada is available.

In addition to operating this e-commerce site, Grim served as Editor of The Othello Outlook newspaper for 5 years; and has worked in journalism for about 9 years. In addition to The Outlook, his articles have also appeared in The Seattle Times, Lake Stevens Journal, the Willapa Harbor Herald and the Bellingham Herald.  He recently completed an original screenplay, Mental Game, which is also now in book form as a young adult piece. It is the story of a struggling professional golfer who utilizes his out-dated equipment and former caddy to regain his winning state of mind.

Grim is a graduate of Bellingham High School and Eastern Washington University. He and his wife Charisma make their home in Bellingham, Washington.
